  • Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia) is a perennial climber that is perhaps best known as a lymph mover and blood purifier. It is a very good Anti-inflammatory (sothahara) & wound healing (vrana ropan) agent. Tinchur of Manjistha is famous in tradition since many centuries.
  • Its name literally means “bright red” and is a nod to its red roots, which means lymph-moving and cleansing property of the plant. Manjistha is also a febrifuge (antipyretic), complexion enhancer, rejuvenative and anti-toxic.
  • While other plants possessing a red root, including beets and Ceanothus americanus (also known as red root), are also highly acclaimed as lymph-movers, manjistha is generally accepted as the most potent of the bunch.
  • manjistha is considered one of the best herbs for skin. It is a celebrated overall rejuvenative for the complexion.
  • Manjistha is a perennial creeper and just like a creeper spreads, it has the ability to move throughout the circulatory system and skin. Its vast spreading nature makes it a fantastic cleanser for stubborn and lingering impurities or wastes in the plasma, blood, lymph and the skin.
  • the lymph (rasa) and blood (rakta) are the first tissues to become congested when the body is not detoxifing properly, and subsequently have a domino effect through the other five tissues of the body unless addressed properly in these early stages. Manjistha can be used both internally and externally. The commonly used part of manjistha is its roots. It can be used whole to make teas or tinctures or it can be used in powdered form, or in capsule form as a supplement. Manjistha can be used externally to soothe the skin. Traditionally Manjistha powder mixed with honey can be applied as a face pack for 10-15 minutes and then washed off with lukewarm water. This promotes clear, glowing skin. Be sure to test a small area of the skin first to see how your skin will react. Do not apply if you feel any redness or itchiness on the test area.
